Science for the city
Wellington is lucky to have several world-class research organisations within the city and nearby Porirua and Lower Hutt: Victoria University of Wellington; Massey University Wellington; Otago University, Wellington; NIWA; GNS Science; Callaghan Innovation; ESR; and CCDHB. Wellington has a highly educated population. And Wellington, with its stunning environment, compactness, availability of recreational facilities (diving, mountain biking, walking, ...), and its social and cultural assets, has the ability to attract talented individuals to come and live here.
By bringing these elements together, along with policy makers and local business people, we can develop our economy and create jobs. "Science for the city" encourages further dialogue between researchers and the Wellington City Council, to inform Councillors and Council staff of potential opportunities, and build on the start which has been made in this way on environmental issues.
Policy on drinking laws, fluoridation, climate change and resilience, for example, must be informed by sound knowledge of relevant science and social science. "Science for the city" supports Grow Wellington to help the growth of business in Wellington. Finally, "Science for the city" is about active encouragement to support the diversification of Wellington's economy into technology and the knowledge economy.
